Meant to be the type of casual French brasserie you’d find on the outskirts of Paris’s 18th, Les Enfants Terribles has evolved from a hipster hotspot to yuppie staple of frill-free bistro dining from its oh-so-cool dining room located on Ave Bernard. Like the inside of a trendy Urban Outfitters, take that as you may, the restaurant interiors were built from mostly recycled material used on salvaged wood paneled walls, bamboo bar and concrete floors.  During warmer summer months, which last until mid-October, an outdoor terrace is the most coveted of tables for weekend brunch and dinners at dusk that sometimes offers live DJ or musical guest.

The Food

Truly one of Montreal’s more playful French bistros with ultra cool following of well connected locals, a hybrid lunch menu is divided between snacks, salads, burgers and cheeses with standouts like baby back ribs with house fries and signature burger that also offers a chicken substitution. Dinner is a more sophisticated affair of roasted chicken and grilled beef plates served with vegetable ragout of gussied-up potato side. Burgers and cedar-plank salmon are also on hand, best accompanied with the houses’ famous macaroni and cheese or rotating pasta special. Weekends offer a brunch menu from 10am to 4pm that’s popular with the hung-over disco set recovering from the night before.

Last Word

Playful Montreal bistro with whimsical interiors offers hipster hideaway for dinner with friends and weekend brunch.
